Learning built around slings, shackles, signals and radios

This course is for lift teams and yard supervisors. The practical work centres on slings, shackles, signals and radios, with the assessment matched to the machine, task and operating conditions the candidate will face.

Skills covered

  • Standard hand signals and radio protocol
  • Sling selection, loading and inspection
  • Lift planning and exclusion zones

Practical situations covered

The exercises reflect the tasks and constraints attached to banksman slinger work.

  1. Exercise 1

Blind lift over a building corner with radio comms only

  2. Exercise 2

Multi-leg sling selection for an awkward, off-centre load

  3. Exercise 3

Receiving an HGV-mounted load in a tight yard with foot traffic

Errors the course addresses

These course-specific errors are dealt with through instruction, observation and practical assessment.

  • Signals improvised instead of the BS 7121 standard set
  • Sling WLL chosen on a single-leg basis when the geometry needed derating
  • Banksman positioned in the load-fall zone to 'get a better view'

What candidates practise on the day

The practical work is built around the lifts your team really does, such as a blind lift over a building corner directed by radio, so signals and communication are tested where they matter.

Candidates must be 18 or over with good eyesight and hearing, because the role depends on seeing the load and hearing the operator.

Banksman, slinger and signaller: one job, several names

A banksman slinger, or slinger signaller, attaches and detaches loads and directs the crane, lorry loader or telehandler operator during the lift. The slinger part is choosing, inspecting and rigging the slings, shackles and other accessories; the signaller part is guiding the operator by hand signals or radio, especially when the operator cannot see the load. Our slinger signaller course covers both.

Vehicle banksman training is a related but different role: guiding reversing vehicles and plant around people on site. Where a team needs both, the content can be planned together, but they should not be confused. A vehicle banksman is not automatically competent to direct a lift.

How to become a slinger signaller

Most people become slinger signallers by taking a course of 1 to 2 days, passing the practical assessment and then building experience on real lifts under supervision. Candidates need to be 18 or over with good eyesight and hearing. From there, many progress to lift supervisor or appointed person roles as their experience grows.

Because training runs on your own site in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire, candidates practise with the lifting accessories, radios and lifts your team really does. The cost depends on group size and duration; our plant training costs guide lists typical ranges.
