ITSSAR Forklift Training on Your Own Trucks
ITSSAR forklift training follows the ITSSAR lift truck scheme, built on the HSE Approved Code of Practice L117 for rider-operated lift trucks. Logan Plant Training delivers ITSSAR training on your own site, on the counterbalance trucks, reach trucks and other lift trucks your operators use every day.
Many businesses choose ITSSAR because their existing fleet training records already run on it, and keeping every operator on one scheme makes audits simpler. We work from our Aboyne base across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and North-East Scotland.
What ITSSAR forklift training includes
Every ITSSAR course has three parts that L117 expects: basic training, specific job training and familiarisation. Basic training covers the skills and knowledge to operate the truck safely. Specific job training applies those skills to your loads, racking and site layout. Familiarisation is the supervised time an operator spends on the job before working alone. Training on your own site means the second and third parts happen in the real workplace from the start.
- Pre-use checks and daily inspection
- Stability, load centres and the rated capacity plate
- Stacking and de-stacking at height, and working with racking
- Safe travel, ramps, loading bays and pedestrians
- Theory assessment and practical test on the truck type
Novice, experienced and refresher routes
A novice has little or no time on a lift truck and needs the full course. An experienced operator who has driven for some time without a current certificate can take a shorter course that checks existing skill and fills gaps before the test. A refresher suits an operator whose certificate is due for review, or who has had an incident or changed truck type.
Our forklift training page sets out the course lengths for each route. Tell us how much experience each operator has and we will recommend the right one, so nobody sits through a longer course than they need.
ITSSAR or RTITB?
ITSSAR and RTITB are both HSE-recognised accrediting bodies for lift truck training, and both work to the same L117 code of practice and a comparable practical test. Most employers treat the two certificates the same. The choice is usually about consistency: if your training matrix, insurer or parent company already uses ITSSAR, staying with it keeps the records clean.
Our RTITB vs ITSSAR comparison goes through the differences in detail. If you would rather train forklifts alongside other plant on one scheme, ask us about forklift training under NPORS instead.
Refresher training and keeping records
Most employers refresh ITSSAR lift truck training every three years, and sooner after an incident, a near miss, a long break or a move to a different truck. Keep each operator's certificate, the employer's written authorisation for the trucks they may use, and a note of their familiarisation together, so an auditor or client can see the full picture quickly.
When several operators are due at once, training them on the same visit keeps disruption down. Call Chris on 07867 933 018 or use the enquiry form below with your numbers and truck types.
