How tracked dumpers handle
Tracked dumpers steer by slowing or reversing one track, so turning on the spot is possible and turning on loose ground digs the tracks in. Traction is excellent, which encourages operators onto slopes where a laden machine becomes unstable. Braking behaviour on descents also differs from a wheeled dumper.
Ride-on tracked dumpers and pedestrian-controlled ones are both common. Walk-behind machines put the operator directly in the path if the machine runs back, which needs its own discussion in training.
Extra hazards to cover
Slope limits from the manufacturer must be known and respected, laden and unladen. Travelling across a slope is riskier than straight up or down. Tipping on an incline, near an excavation edge or with a rotating skip turned sideways all raise the risk of overturn.
Visibility over a raised load, access through narrow gates and pedestrians in residential or landscaping settings are frequent issues, especially on smaller domestic jobs where a site is not formally controlled.
