Standard telehandler wins when…
For general yard work, farm material handling, builders' merchants and most housebuilding sites, a standard telehandler does the job and the ticket is quicker and cheaper to obtain.
Rotating (360°) telehandler wins when…
Where the job genuinely requires slewed lifts — lifting a roof truss into position while the chassis stays put, or placing cladding panels around a building perimeter — the rotating telehandler earns its cost, and in some cases replaces a mobile crane booking altogether.
Cost & time
A standard telehandler novice course runs 3–5 days. Stepping up to the rotating category for an existing telehandler ticket-holder is typically a further 2–3 days because much of the pre-use and theory content carries over, but the practical lift-planning and slewing assessment is new and non-negotiable.
Compliance
Rotating telehandler lifts are frequently treated under the same LOLER 1998 lift-planning discipline as mobile crane lifts, given the crane-like envelope. PUWER 1998 still applies to both machine types for general work equipment suitability and maintenance.
Our recommendation
Don't buy the rotating ticket speculatively. If your programme has two or three genuine slewed-lift jobs a year, compare the training and hire premium against simply subcontracting a mobile crane for those specific lifts — for many smaller contractors that's actually the cheaper route. If slewed lifts are a recurring part of your work, the rotating ticket pays for itself quickly.
