Excavator Training: Categories, Duration and What to Expect
Excavators are the machine most people picture when they hear plant training, and they carry the widest spread of categories of any machine family. A ticket earned on a three-tonne rubber-tracked mini-digger tells an employer almost nothing about an operator's ability on a twenty-tonne tracked machine lifting pipe sections into a trench.
The category system exists precisely to make that distinction, and understanding it saves money. Booking the wrong category means either paying twice or discovering at the site gate that the certificate does not cover the machine.

180 versus 360 excavators
A 180 excavator is the backhoe-loader family — a machine with a loading shovel at the front and a boom at the rear with limited slew. It is a different discipline from a 360 machine, involving working from a fixed position with stabilisers deployed, and switching between the two ends of the machine.
A 360 excavator rotates fully on its slew ring, and the operator has to manage counterweight swing, tail swing clearance and the stability envelope as the machine turns. On a confined Aberdeen city-centre site the tail swing consideration is often the biggest practical risk, which is why zero-tail-swing machines are so popular in urban work.
Tracked, wheeled and weight categories
Tracked and wheeled 360 machines are treated as separate categories because they behave differently. A wheeled machine travels faster, needs stabilisers or a blade for stability when digging, and is far more likely to be used on the public highway or on a hard-surfaced compound. A tracked machine handles soft ground better but requires more thought about track loading and travel over services.
Weight is the other split. Most schemes divide categories at ten tonnes. Machines below ten tonnes cover the mini and midi range common in landscaping, drainage and domestic work. Above ten tonnes covers the mainstream construction and civils machines. An operator certificated below ten tonnes is not covered on a twenty-tonne machine, and that is a routine cause of gate refusals.

When digging becomes lifting
The moment a load is suspended from the excavator — a pipe on chains, a manhole ring, a concrete section, a lifting eye on the bucket — the operation falls under LOLER 1998. That brings three requirements: the machine must be fitted for lifting with the correct rated capacity indicator and check valves where required, the lift must be planned by a competent person, and the operation must be appropriately supervised.
In practice that means the operator needs a lifting duties endorsement, and there must usually be a trained slinger signaller attaching loads and directing the operator. It also means thorough examination under LOLER applies to the machine's lifting arrangement and to every chain, sling and shackle used.
This is one of the most frequent gaps we find on sites across the North East. The excavator ticket is present, the slinger training is not, and nobody has written the lift plan.
What a good excavator course covers
Content should go well beyond levers. Pre-use inspection, track and undercarriage checks, quick-hitch safety and the specific procedure for confirming a bucket is locked, working near excavations and understanding batter angles, underground services and the use of cable avoidance tools, ground bearing pressure, working on gradients, loading and unloading from a transporter, and safe travel are all core.
Quick-hitch procedure deserves special mention because bucket detachment incidents have caused fatalities. A competent operator can describe and demonstrate the locking check every time, without being prompted.
Practical assessment should reflect the ground you actually work on. Trenching in wet Aberdeenshire clay behaves nothing like a dry demonstration area, and the assessment is far more useful where it happens in real conditions on your own site.

Progression and adding categories
Operators commonly start on a below-ten-tonne tracked machine and progress upward as experience builds. Adding the above-ten-tonne category later is a shorter course than starting from scratch, and adding lifting duties is usually a one-day endorsement.
For employers, the efficient pattern is to identify the machines actually in the fleet and card operators to those, then add categories as the fleet changes rather than speculatively. Where a machine is hired in seasonally, plan the training before the hire starts — arranging an assessment during a two-week hire window is a recurring source of stress and cost.
