Load-chart & stability considerations
Boom lifts have a genuinely dynamic stability envelope: as the boom extends and articulates outward, the safe working envelope narrows sharply, and wind loading becomes a real factor at height in a way it isn't for scissor lifts. We train operators to respect the machine's own envelope-limiting system rather than override it, and to treat wind-speed limits and outreach limits as equally important — a common cause of tip-overs is operators positioning at maximum outreach in wind conditions the machine wasn't rated for at that reach.

What's the difference between a scissor lift and boom lift ticket?
Scissor lifts (3a) only go straight up, while boom lifts (3b) reach up and outward — the outreach, wind-loading and envelope-management skills are different enough to need separate certification.
Can boom lifts be used near overhead lines?
Only with a specific risk assessment and safe clearance distance in line with HSE guidance on overhead line proximity — we cover this explicitly for vegetation-clearance and rail-corridor work.
Do you train on truck-mounted or self-propelled booms?

Cherry picker, boom lift, MEWP: the same machine
A cherry picker is a boom-type mobile elevating work platform, or MEWP. In the category system it is a 3b machine: self-propelled, with an articulated or telescopic boom that reaches up and out from the base. Cherry picker training and boom lift training are therefore the same thing, and the course is separate from scissor lift training because outreach, slew and harness use add hazards a vertical lift does not have.
Boom lift training typically takes a day for a single category. It covers pre-use checks, ground conditions, travelling with the platform raised, working near structures and overhead lines, harness and lanyard use, and emergency lowering so someone on the ground can bring the platform down.
Cherry picker licence and training in North-East Scotland
There is no government cherry picker licence. The card an operator holds comes from accredited training and a test on the MEWP category, and employers must make sure anyone working at height on a platform is trained under the Work at Height Regulations and PUWER.
