AITT Explained: Another Recognised Route for Lift Truck Training
AITT is a further HSE-recognised accrediting body for lift truck operator training, again built around the HSE L117 Approved Code of Practice. It sits alongside RTITB and ITSSAR as one of several legitimate national accrediting bodies for forklift training, and also accredits some rider-operated and pedestrian truck categories.

Who demands it
Employers and insurers with an existing AITT-based fleet training record. As with the other lift-truck accrediting bodies, general acceptance across NE Scotland warehousing and distribution sites is broad, and the choice usually comes down to existing paperwork consistency.
How it's assessed
Theory assessment on legislation and safe operating principles, plus a hands-on practical test against the L117 syllabus, delivered by an AITT-accredited instructor.
When AITT is right
If your existing training records or instructor network are AITT-based, consistency is the sensible choice — there's no meaningful safety-standard difference to switch schemes for.
When it's not the right fit
If you want a single scheme covering forklifts alongside excavators, telehandlers or MEWPs in one framework, a broader multi-category scheme such as NPORS may simplify your training administration.
Renewal
Refresher training and reassessment, commonly on a 3-year cycle or sooner following an incident, extended absence, or equipment change.

Is AITT less recognised than RTITB or ITSSAR?
No — all three are HSE-recognised, L117-aligned accrediting bodies; recognition in practice comes down to your specific client or insurer's preference, not an inherent hierarchy.
Does switching accrediting bodies cause a problem?
No — operators and employers can move between schemes for future training without invalidating certificates already held.
Does AITT cover excavators or telehandlers?
Its core focus is lift trucks and related equipment — for excavators and telehandlers, NPORS or CPCS are more commonly used.
