CPCS Cards Explained: Red, Blue, Renewal and Who Asks For Them

Who demands it
Tier-1 principal contractors and major civils frameworks working across Aberdeenshire and the wider North-East — CPCS is frequently named explicitly in pre-qualification documents for large construction and infrastructure projects, even where a site is physically in a region where NPORS is otherwise common.
How it's assessed
Assessment combines a computer-based theory test, a practical skills test carried out by an approved CPCS tester, and — for the Blue card route — a workplace-based NVQ/SVQ with log-book evidence of on-site competence over time.
Renewal
Red cards move toward the Blue card by completing the relevant NVQ within the card's validity window; Blue cards renew on a 5-year cycle, generally requiring evidence of continued operation and a renewal test where the card has lapsed.
When CPCS is right
Choose CPCS if your work is, or is likely to become, tier-1 construction, major civils or infrastructure where the principal contractor's pre-qualification specifically names the scheme — no equivalent scheme will satisfy a document that names CPCS explicitly.
When it's not the right fit
If your work is agricultural, forestry, harbour/port, distillery, quarrying or general industrial with no specific CPCS requirement in your contracts, the faster and typically cheaper NPORS route (see /compare/cpcs-vs-npors-card) is usually more practical.
