Experienced Worker Test for Plant Operators

Many good plant operators have years on a machine but no card to show for it. They learned on the job, were never put through formal training, and now find that a site, client or insurer wants to see a current operator card. The experienced worker test is the route for them: instead of a full novice course, the operator's existing skill is checked, gaps are filled and they go forward to the test.

Logan Plant Training delivers this through the NPORS route, leading to an NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo, on your own site and machine. We work from our Aboyne base across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and North-East Scotland.

Who the experienced worker test is for

The route suits operators who use a machine regularly and competently but hold no card, hold a card that lapsed long ago, or moved from a job where training was never recorded. It is not a shortcut for someone who has only sat on a machine a few times. The test checks real ability, and an operator without enough experience is better served by the novice course.

In many teams the experienced operator is the person everyone goes to for advice on the machine. Putting that person through the test turns their skill into a card the site will accept, and gives the employer the training record PUWER expects.

How the route works

The day starts by finding out what the operator already does well and what needs work. The instructor watches them on the machine, covers any theory or practice they are missing, and then the operator takes the theory and practical test.

  • Tell us the machine category and how long the operator has been using it
  • Employer confirmation of experience helps decide whether this route fits
  • Short refresher on checks, safe working and any gaps in technique
  • Theory test on the category
  • Practical test on the machine, on your site
  • NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo on success

How to prepare for the test

Experienced operators often fail on the things habit has smoothed over: skipping parts of the pre-use check, travelling with a raised load, or not being able to explain why a rule exists. Before the test, run through the manufacturer's checks, revisit the rated capacity or load chart for the machine, and be ready to talk through how you would deal with ground, people and other plant around you.

If the instructor finds that an operator is not ready for the test, the honest answer is more training first. That protects the operator, the site and the value of the card.

Experienced worker test or novice course?

Our comparison of the novice and experienced worker routes sets out the differences in more detail. For a team with a mix of experience, we can put the experienced operators through the test and the newer staff through the full course on the same visit. A route for operators with real experience on a machine but no card, where existing skill is checked and the operator goes forward to the theory and practical test.

You should be using the machine regularly and competently. Tell us how long and how often you have used it, and we will advise whether this route or the novice course fits.
What happens if I fail the experienced worker test?
The instructor will explain where you fell short, and further training can be arranged before you are tested again.
Is the experienced worker test available on every machine?
It is available on the machine categories we train, matched to the machine you use. Tell us the machine when you enquire.
