NPORS Card Renewal: How to Renew Your NPORS Card

NPORS card renewal keeps an operator's registration current so they can keep working on the machines they are carded for. An NPORS card is typically valid for five years, and renewal is through a refresher course and reassessment before it expires. Logan Plant Training delivers NPORS training, including renewal, on your own site and machine, leading to NPORS cards carrying the CSCS logo.

This page is for operators whose card is coming up for expiry and for employers keeping a team's cards in date. We work from our Aboyne base across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and North-East Scotland.

How long does an NPORS card last?

NPORS cards are typically valid for five years. The expiry date is printed on the card, and you can confirm it through the NPORS online card checker. Each category on the card is renewed by reassessment in that category, so an operator with several machines on one card should plan which categories they still use before booking.

Leave enough time. Renewing before expiry means the operator keeps working without a gap, and the refresher can be planned around the work rather than squeezed in after a site turns someone away at the gate.

How do I renew my NPORS card?

Renewing an NPORS card is not a form-filling exercise on its own. The operator takes a refresher and reassessment with an accredited NPORS instructor/tester, covering the theory and a practical test on the machine category. Once passed, the registration is renewed for that category.

  • Check the expiry date and the categories on the current card
  • Decide which categories are still needed for the work
  • Book the refresher and reassessment before the card expires
  • Complete the theory and practical reassessment on the machine
  • Receive the renewed NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo

Can I renew my NPORS card online?

Not entirely. Because renewal includes a practical reassessment on the machine, it cannot be completed purely online. Checking your current card and its expiry can be done through the NPORS online card checker, and we can talk you through the paperwork for renewal when you book.

What if my NPORS card has expired?

If an NPORS card has expired, the operator should not rely on it as evidence of a current registration. A card that lapsed recently can usually be brought back through the refresher and reassessment route. Where the gap has been long, or the operator has had little recent machine time, fuller retraining may be needed depending on how long it has been.

Tell us when the card expired and how much the operator has used the machine since, and Chris will advise which route fits.

Red cards, blue cards and renewal

NPORS has two operator stages. The red Trained Operator card is issued after training and test; the blue Competent Operator card follows a relevant vocational qualification, such as an NVQ or SVQ, built from evidence gathered while doing the job. Operators on a red card often use renewal time as the point to plan their move to the blue card, so their next card reflects the experience they have gained.

To apply for an NPORS blue card, an operator works towards the relevant qualification while doing the job. Our guide to NPORS card types explains how red and blue cards with the CSCS logo work and how to progress.

Renewal cost and renewing a whole team

The NPORS renewal cost is mostly the cost of the refresher day and reassessment, which depends on the machines and how many operators are renewed together. Typical UK ranges for refreshers are set out in our plant training costs guide, and card fees are sometimes quoted separately.

For employers, renewing several operators on one visit, on your own machines, keeps the cost per head down and keeps the whole team's cards in step. Call 07867 933 018 with the list of operators, categories and expiry dates and we will plan it with you.
