Who demands it
Widely accepted across NE Scotland's distilleries, harbours, farms, quarries, wind farm compounds and general industrial sites, and increasingly accepted on construction sites too — though some tier-1 principal contractors still specify CPCS explicitly in their pre-qualification documents.
How it's assessed
A theory element (often computer or paper-based) plus a hands-on practical assessment carried out by an accredited NPORS instructor/tester on the relevant machine category, following the syllabus for that category.
Renewal
Cards are typically valid for 5 years; renewal is via a refresher course and reassessment before expiry. Lapsed cards beyond a certain point may require fuller retraining depending on how long the gap has been.
When NPORS is right
Choose NPORS where there's no specific scheme mandated by your client, or where your sector is agriculture, forestry, ports, distilling, quarrying or wind energy — it's generally faster to book, more cost-effective, and available for on-site delivery on your own machines.
When it's not the right fit
If your principal contractor's pre-qualification documentation specifically names CPCS, an NPORS card won't satisfy that requirement regardless of its underlying quality — always check the pre-qual wording first.
